How it works.

What the library is

LawPal holds judgments of the Sri Lankan courts and Acts of Parliament, for attorneys and researchers to find judgments with similar facts. Judgments are public court documents delivered in open court. The library is behind a sign-in: search engines don't index it, and nothing in it appears in a public search for your name.

What you can ask for

  • Removal of a judgment that names you. You don't have to prove a legal right first.
  • Correction of a record about you, such as a misspelt name or a wrong case number.
  • To be told which documents in the library mention you.
  • To object to our processing, under the Personal Data Protection Act, No. 9 of 2022.

What we do

  • We acknowledge your request within 5 working days and act on it within 30 days, free of charge. If it needs longer, we say so and why.
  • A removal takes out all of it: the document, its text, the search index, the case record, the stored file and any summary.
  • We record the removal so that the judgment can never come back into the library.
  • We tell you the outcome.

Children, and victims of sexual offences

Names of children and of victims of sexual offences are replaced with initials in the library. If a judgment still names such a person, we act on it immediately, and we don't ask anyone to establish anything first. You don't have to be the person named to tell us.

Copyright and other rights

If you believe something in the library infringes your copyright or another right, tell us using the form or at info@lawpal.lk. No formal notice is needed: we look at it and take it down if you are right.

What we cannot do

Removing LawPal's copy doesn't change the court's record or any other publisher's copy, and LawPal can't tell you what a judgment means for you. LawPal is not a firm of Attorneys-at-Law, and nothing on this page is legal advice.

If you are not satisfied

Tell us, and a person will look at it again. You also have the right to complain to the Data Protection Authority of Sri Lanka; see complaints in our privacy policy. You don't have to come to us first.
